Fernpresso At Lake is set back from the shoreline of Lake Aunjai within Chiang Mai University’s Mae Hea campus. The lake, and majestic Doi Suthep mountain beyond, provide a stunning backdrop for this delightful cafe/restaurant that offers a serene escape from the city’s noise and bustle.
Beyond the Turquoise Door: Discovering Fernpresso’s Oasis
Fernpresso has a small chain of cafe’s in Chiang Mai. Their lakeside offering is entered via a quiet university road, through a faded turquoise antique wooden doorway – set within a manicured line of bushes. Chiang Mai seems to abound with magical entrances like these, which heighten the anticipation of what lies beyond. And this Fernpresso doesn’t disappoint.

Step inside and you’re greeted by the spray of cooling misters and an abundance of hanging ferns over a charming paved and pebbled courtyard area. It’s an immediately relaxing area, with plush cushioned iron-framed sofas, long tables for socialising, plus a cool couple sized zen-like deck with mats and cushions. It’s a delightful space to while away the hours. Parasols and fans add a touch of cool comfort providing some respite from the sun and tropical heat.

Lake Views & Coffee Magic
The courtyard wraps around an air-conditioned interior, where you can order and pay at the counter. It’s a light and airy space filled with natural light from tall windows that provide views over the lake. Inside, exposed brick and concrete panels on the opposite walls give it an urban feel and modern aesthetic that contrasts with the natural beauty outside. There’s some stylish wooden furniture here, with bench seating and a few low armchairs. Bar stools at a high table afford relaxing views out of the window. There’s also a slow bar where the cafe’s baristas craft their caffeine creations. A reminder that Fernpresso are serious about their coffee.

From here, you step outside to the lakeside seating area, where tables and chairs are scattered under white parasols and in the shade of the trees. There are bench tables down by the waters edge too. This area offers gorgeous views over the lake and mountains, adding another delightful dimension to the Fernpresso experience.

Beyond the main room with payment counter, there’s also a room at the back featuring simple tables and chairs. While this room doesn’t offer the same ambiance as the other areas, it provides a quieter space for those looking to focus or enjoy a more private setting.
A Feast for the Eyes and Taste Buds at Fernpresso At Lake
Fernpresso At Lake’s menu is a delight for both the eyes and taste buds. Choose from Western classics like Eggs Benedict and creamy omelettes, or indulge in flavourful Thai fried rice, and noodle dishes. Refreshing soups and spicy salads round out the menu, alongside their signature Fernpresso Homy Sandwich, a comforting combination of fried egg, bacon, and cheese. Don’t miss their visually striking blue butterfly pea rice and their best-selling Healthy Honey Toast, a decadent indulgence served in a huge bowl!

Drinks wise you can complement your meal with an excellent selection of smoothies, healthy juices, and fresh sodas, alongside signature drinks. They also offer green tea matchas and a variety of other teas. Coffee enthusiasts will appreciate the range of premium coffee beans, both local and imported, with detailed tasting notes – expertly brewed at the slow bar. And for those with a sweet tooth there are plentiful cakes or desserts to choose from on their menu or at the counter display.
A Lakeside Stroll
Don’t miss the opportunity to take a stroll along the lakeside and surrounding grounds on your visit to Fernpresso. The view across the lake through the long grasses — and red flowers of the flame forest trees when in bloom — is stunning whatever the weather. There’s a small picturesque dock that extends into the lake that offers a prime photo spot too.

The grounds here have a nursery-like feel with various shrubs and plants growing in bordered areas, perhaps in connection with the University’s Agricultural Centre — complete with rusting tractor!
The tranquil Aunjai Reservoir is like the smaller, less busy sister of Ang Kaew, situated further north within the main University campus. It’s a charming spot for some rest and relaxation. Before you leave, take a step through the mist spraying circular sculpture near the cafe’s garden entrance for a brief refreshing experience!
Take Home a Taste of Fernpresso
You can take home the Fernpresso experience with a range of premium coffee beans, capsules, and drip bags.
