Sun Rays Cafe is a small and cosy spot nestled on the ground floor of a three-storey townhouse on a quiet street in Chiang Mai’s Old City. Despite its modest size, the cafe offers a big and diverse menu, making it a popular and top choice for those seeking a hearty breakfast or brunch, with healthy options, in the old town.
Nostalgic Charm Meets Cosy Comfort at Sun Rays Cafe
Stepping into Sun Rays Cafe is a little like entering a quaint English village cafe. Wooden chairs and tables are set with a range of condiments, while a curtained counter adds to the old world charm. The space is brimming with all sorts of knick-knacks—some might call it clutter, but it lends the cafe a certain rustic charm. From toys and dolls to acorns, old tins, books, and vases, it has the nostalgia of a vintage antique shop.

The room is light and airy, bathed in a soft light from a voile-curtained main window. It’s a double-height loft-style space with a windowed mezzanine floor above at the back that’s stacked with boxes… and some giant daisies! Mellow music from a Marshall speaker adds to the relaxed vibe, while a variety of potted greenery is scattered throughout the cafe, lending to the warm atmosphere. Space is limited though with only five or six tables inside. Outside at the front there’s a communal bench table and further limited seating.

A Menu to Delight: Why Sun Rays Cafe Shines in Chiang Mai
Take a glance at the menu and you’ll get a hint at why Sun Rays Cafe is so popular. It’s a well-presented menu filled with eye-catching delights. From healthy fruit bowls to classic Eggs and Bacon served with a croissant or waffle. Their healthy salads include Mozzarella, Avocado and Boiled Egg, Smoked Salmon, Tofu, and Tuna, and of course, the classic Caesar Salad. The menu also features a variety of open and traditional sandwiches, including the popular Sun Rays Club Sandwich. But the highlight has to be the Ryan French Toast, with an abundance of seasonal fruit, homemade strawberry sauce, and maple syrup — one of the biggest and best French Toasts you’ll find in Chiang Mai.

Each dish is generously portioned and beautifully presented, making it a magnet for Instagram foodies.
For dessert, Sun Rays offers a variety of waffle creations with toppings ranging from seasonal fruits to Nutella and Peanut Butter. They’ve also a tempting selection of homemade cookies and cakes, including their not-to-be-missed Fudge Brownies.

Drinks-wise, the selection is varied. From refreshing sodas to traditional and fruit teas, Thai tea, and specialty Japanese teas like Hojicha and Matcha. Classic hot and iced coffee options are also available, with a choice of medium or dark beans, including a Vegan Latte served with Soy, Almond, or Coconut Milk. For something more indulgent, try their decadent ‘Chocco’ specials topped with Brownie, Oreo, or Kit Kat and whipped cream.

A Local Gem Worth the Wait
Sun Rays Cafe is a popular spot, and a local favourite. But due to its intimate size and limited seating, you can expect a bit of a wait for a table during busy times. We believe it’s worth the wait though. And once seated, the service is typically friendly and efficient.
