Located on the quiet fringe where Chang Moi borders Wat Ket, Baan 104 is a delightful fusion of cafe, creative hub and heritage space. Housed in a charming old Lanna-colonial villa that spans more than a century, it offers more than just a place to grab a coffee — it’s a welcoming “home” for locals and travellers alike.

A Gentle Welcome at Baan 104
The exterior of Baan 104 retains the gracious lines of a colonial house — subtle ornamentation, shuttered windows, and a warm, soft cream facade that’s gently weathered in places. A Flame Tree (Royal Poinciana) stands prominently out front, its branches stretching wide overhead; when in bloom, it casts the whole entrance in a canopy of bright, fiery flowers.
Potted plants cluster around the base of the house, softening the edges and lending a lived-in warmth. Beneath the awning, a small seating area sits on the brick terrace with folding tables and simple stools — casual, unfussy, and the kind of spot to pause for a moment before heading inside.

Alongside the house, a shaded courtyard offers more room to sit — black metal tables, soft light and the quiet hum of the dance studio next door. It’s an easy spot for a morning coffee, a book or a bit of work.
Downstairs at Baan 104
Inside, the decor continues the narrative — vintage timber flooring, high ceilings, and a thoughtful mix of mid-century pieces and local design furniture. The space feels gently worn-in in a way that’s inviting rather than precious: textured, softly patinated walls and windows framed with traditional lattice-like metalwork that cast patterned shadows across the room.

The Pantry Cafe Space
On the ground floor is The Pantry cafe zone, which opens with a cosy sitting area: a piano, a low sofa, and a simple wooden side table — a corner for pausing rather than passing through. Built-in benches, slender cafe tables, and a few mid-century armchairs form intimate pockets for reading, working, or simply settling into the quiet.

A Communal Table at the Heart of the Room
Further inside, a long communal wooden table invites quiet conversation and shared company, while the lattice windows allow natural light to pool softly through the day. Framed prints rest casually against the walls, reinforcing the sense that the space is lived in rather than staged.

Details That Tell a Story
Small vignettes of objects add warmth and personality — a beautiful old wooden radio set with a tiny clock and twisted taper candle on the sill, or a Chiang Mai book beside a sculptural green lamp catching the afternoon light.

These details are subtle, thoughtful, and distinctly charming. In contrast, a modern Yamaha audio system brings a sleek touch to the main room, filling the space with a chilled, soulful mix that perfectly suits slow mornings and easy afternoons.
It’s calm, softly nostalgic, and deeply unhurried — a place that feels like it holds stories, and is quietly ready to hold new ones.

A Step Through the Archway
Through an open archway off the main sitting room, you step into the counter area — The Pantry’s small service hub. The space is warm and softly lit, with dark timber cabinetry, exposed ceiling beams and a few vintage-inspired pendant lights that hang low over the counter.

Here, you’ll find a compact display of baked goods arranged under glass domes, alongside small seasonal touches and bunches of greenery. A chalkboard specials menu is mounted on the wall, and shelves along the back hold wine glasses, jars, coffee beans, tea tins and the cafe’s everyday wares.

Ordering is relaxed and unhurried: browse the menu on the tablet, take a moment to look over the pastries and cakes, and decide whether you’d like something light, something sweet, or simply a coffee. The setup feels more like being in someone’s home kitchen than a commercial counter — intimate, unfussy, and quietly considered.
A Taste of Baan 104
The Pantry at Baan 104 is a place where you can linger over coffee, something freshly baked, or a light bite that borders between breakfast and dessert — all made with raw ingredients sourced from Chiang Mai’s farmers and organic growers. The menu is tight but considered, leaning into comfort and craft in equal measure.

Sweet Comforts & Savoury Favourites
The sweet side of the menu is where The Pantry shines. The Waffle with Berries is light and bright, while the Waffle Banoffee layers banana, caramel, and cream into something more indulgent. Scones with cream and jam are a favourite — simple, classic, and best enjoyed warm. Various cake options, including homemade classics, bring a cosy, homemade charm, made for pairing with an afternoon cup. A Madeleine Bag makes for a sweet takeaway, and the Mini Choux — in vanilla or caramel — are delightful little bites that add just enough decadence. For something heartier, the Toasted Banana Bread hits that sweet spot between breakfast and treat.

If you prefer savoury, the Bacon & Egg Waffle, Ham & Cheese Waffle, and Waffle & Scramble Egg make a perfect late-morning option — rich yet comforting. The Yoghurt Granola Bowl rounds things out with a touch of freshness and balance.
Given the heritage of the space, the menu is more boutique cafe than full brunch spread. If you’re looking for a heavy breakfast or lunch, you might need to pair this with elsewhere — but for thoughtful bites and quality drinks, it hits the mark.

Sips to Savour
Coffee here is smooth and thoughtfully made — from a simple Espresso to the richer Latte, Mocha, and Cappuccino, available hot or iced. For something lighter, the iced Latte Shot adds a subtle caffeine lift without the weight.
Tea drinkers will find plenty to explore, from the classic English Earl Grey and Afternoon Blend to fragrant options like Oolong Jasmine, Oolong Lychee, and the delicate Monsoon Blend White, a floral mix of rose, ginger, peach, and watermelon. The Tropical Sunset — a blend of black and green tea with mango, passion fruit, papaya, and jasmine — adds a fruity flourish.

The iced tea list is equally refreshing, with Ceylon Lavender Lime, Rose Water, and Green Tea Elderflower bringing gentle, aromatic flavours. Under Milk & Yoghurt, nostalgic favourites like Thai Milk Tea, Earl Grey Milk Tea, Chocolate Milk, Strawberry Milk, and Banana Milk add a soft, playful note — alongside the creamy Yoghurt Granola, which doubles as a snackable option.
And for something sparkling, The Pantry’s Rose Lemonade, Wild English Elderflowers, and Mandarin & Seville Orange Jigger deliver a crisp, botanical finish that’s light, fragrant, and unmistakably refreshing.

The History of Baan 104
A House with a Past

Baan 104 is a century-old Lanna-colonial home shaped by many lives and changing times. Originally commissioned as a bridal house for a local merchant family, its story took an unexpected turn when the completed home was struck by lightning before it could be lived in (a sign of bad luck). It later became a residence for missionaries, and then an international kindergarten — part of the quiet, everyday fabric of the neighbourhood — before eventually sitting still for some years.
The house was revived by three siblings — Jay, Joe and Gigi — who saw both its beauty and its potential. Rather than renovating into something polished and new, they kept much of the original character and patina, re-imagining the home as a shared space for Chiang Mai’s creative and local communities. The result is Baan 104 as it is today: part cafe, part meeting point, part gentle refuge — a place shaped as much by the people who spend time here as by its history.
